As Nazi persecution against Jews in the Netherlands increased, the family went into hiding in 1942. Two years later, however, , the Frank family was captured and sent to a concentration camp. Katya Budanova was a Russian female fighter pilot. Born on December 7, 1916, Ella Katya became interested in airplanes after working in an airplane factory. She learned to fly and became part of the all-female 586th Fighter Regiment. During World War II, she flew a solo combat mission shooting down an enemy plane. However, this mission was her last, as her plane was also shot down. She died on July 19, 1943.
