The Smart Maths series consists of four books. These books are intended for children from LKG to Grade I. Although many abacus-based mental math courses are flooded in the market, there is no authentic material available in bookstores on abacus. This series of books is an initiative taken by a Bangalore-based mental math educational company for the benefit of students. The main advantage of this series is that primary schools and even interested parents can teach children by following the instructions given in the books.
The first book begins with the introduction and the physical meaning of numbers, the representation of numbers on the abacus with many games and puzzles to make learning interesting. After introducing number concepts up to 50, simple addition and subtraction concepts are explained with practice additions. Subsequent combinations in the easy format are clearly explained by defining the hard problems separately. This ensures that if the child doesn’t have these issues, it’s not a big deal, understanding will come in time, this prevents anxiety on the part of the parents.
In the other two books, various combinations from +/-9 to +/-1 and built-in combinations have been explained with worked examples. Misleading sums have been clearly marked. By the end of the series, children will be able to do all kinds of addition and subtraction up to five two-digit numbers. Mental calculations are integrated from the beginning and this will sharpen the visualization skills of the little ones and help activate the right brain.
