Not many people would say that being a parent is simple, but like anything else, there are skills you can develop that will help make the job easier. It’s so easy to think you’re making solid parenting decisions when everything is going great. As a parent, one of the most important duties you have to your children is to set a good example for them to follow. It is much easier to tell children to do or not to do something than to be a good role model, but this is what they really need more than anything else. It is easier for children to learn by watching others than it is to learn by simply telling them things, so it is very important that you always match your words and actions.

As soon as the child is old enough to notice these facts, make sure they know their full name, phone number, and location. They have to know how to locate you both at home and at work. You should consider letting your child carry a cell phone (crisis only) so they can contact you or dial 911 if the need arises. There are many cell phone carriers that have made plans just for these reasons. In case your child is in a place where someone, like a friend or family member, is closer than you, make sure they know how to communicate with this person. Regardless, it’s completely common for brothers and sisters to fight and blame each other for not being called.

An oversight that people and anyone accused of dealing with children make too often is to accept that children are doing what they should be doing. There is an exceptionally old saying that moms have eyes in the back of their heads. So to speak, this is something akin to having a psychic ability, or perhaps what many people think of as instinct.

Whether you’re referring a mother or a father, acknowledging their children is something every guardian will do, just to check that they’re doing what they’re supposed to. But you don’t want to create the feeling that your home is a surveillance state; you should use some common sense. Parenting tips are usually just general suggestions, and you should fill in the details. The possibilities are counted by hundreds, so talking about many of them is impossible. When you first become a parent, you may think you’ll never know what’s best for you and your child, but you will learn.
