Isla Mujeres in Mexico is a great way to escape the tourist crush in Cancun. Approximately 9 miles offshore, the island contains Mexican beach culture from a bygone era. Oh, and the name translates to “The Island of Women.”

Women Island

First things first, the Isla de las Mujeres is not populated with more, different or any other classification of women than those normally found in Mexico. Okay, there is a Bay of Women, but don’t go there. Instead, Isla Mujeres is simply an incredibly beautiful island.

Snorkeling and Diving

El Garrafón Underwater National Park is located in the extreme southwest of the Island. If you are interested in fun underwater, this park offers tremendous visibility in warm waters. Unfortunately, a private company now manages the park. This, of course, means you have to pay to get in and the quiet area has a definite touristy feel with kayaks and other water toys for rent. Still, the park is very large and your experience shouldn’t be too affected.

If you are looking for a beach town feel, the northern tip of the island should be your destination. Playa Norte ‘offers beautiful beaches, restaurants, hotels and more or less everything you may need. Take the Zacil Ha road out and you will find some pretty secluded beaches.

If total isolation is your thing, there are many remote beach areas on the island. Walk south from Playa Pescador and you will leave humanity behind. The same is true if you are heading north from Playa Lancheros. Just grab a map of the island or ask a local for directions.

Get there

Isla Mujeres has an airport, but traveling by boat from Cancun is cheaper. There are numerous public ferries that travel to the island. Coming and going is not a problem. Just be sure to check the schedule for the return trips.

Although Isla Mujeres doesn’t live up to its name, there is definitely a beauty to be found. If you are on vacation in Cancun, be sure to visit the island for a day trip.
