All winter you have been waiting for the snow to melt and the ground to dry out. All winter you’ve been looking longingly at those golf clubs, like a lover who’s just out of reach. While you wait, take some time to refresh yourself on a few things.

When you hold your golf clubs, you should feel comfortable. You may have the best shape on your block, but if it’s not comfortable, you’re not going to have any fun. For left-handed people, reverse the following. Take your left hand. Wrap it tightly around the stick about a half inch from the top. Make sure your thumb is pointing directly down the stick. Then put your right hand around the stick. Your left thumb should be under your middle, ring, and pinky fingers. Make sure you hold on tight. The stronger you grip it, the better your shot will be.

Keep your wrists still. Use your left thumb as a guide. Point it down and make sure it is parallel to the front of the club. Left-handed people, this will be the opposite.

Golf gloves can also help. Your grip will be stronger and you will be more comfortable. But don’t loosen your grip, keep it as tight as possible. This proper grip will help your game no matter what shot you’re up against.

A couple of general things to always remember: make sure your clubs are at waist height and keep your head down until you’ve hit the ball. With these few tips, you will surely have a better game this year. See you on the tee!
