Part of the UFC’s plan for total world domination includes opening official UFC gyms around the world. These new super centers are designed to appeal to everyone, not just those hoping to fight in the Octagon. With the attraction and brand awareness of the UFC, these new gyms could become serious competition for many martial arts schools around the world.
To get an idea of what you’re going to have to compete with besides the UFC name (which is going to be pretty tough) let’s take a look at what it’s all about:
- Approximately 40,000 square feet
- It features an octagon and octagon discipline training.
- The Arm Bar and store offering UFC clothing and gear
- Weight and cardio areas
- Classes and group training zones
- kids clubs
Unfortunately, they not only offer an MMA Black Belt training system, but also Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai and TaeKwonDo martial arts classes, even for children, which will make them even more competitive. No doubt you’ll also be dealing with a bit of PR when a UFC gym comes to your town, as they’re bound to be using fighters and the Octagon Girls to promote openings and tours.
Fortunately, there are currently only two open. Both are in California, one in Concord and the other in Los Angeles. Looking at the available job openings, it appears that the next UFC gyms to open will be in Hawaii and Montreal. Although you can be sure there are already hundreds more in the works.
One thing is for sure, when they really start to diversify, you are going to face some serious competition. Don’t be discouraged though, competition is usually a good thing. In fact, a UFC gym coming to your area will mean they are spending thousands and thousands of dollars promoting martial arts and creating demand and not everyone will be able to or want to go there. Rethink your marketing and positioning strategies now to be better prepared for a UFC gym opening near you so that when you arrive you can capitalize on the event.
