The Smeg SY4110s represents an iconic moment in the history of the famous home and appliance manufacturer. Its modern look and severe finish herald a departure from the familiar 1950s retro styling we all know and love from the masters of Italian style.

That said, the new Smeg cooker range is manufactured to the high build quality we’ve come to expect. The only difference is in the look of the kitchen, which should open up a new market for the appliance maker, as well as satisfy many of its original fans. The Smeg SY4110s was extensively tested for 2 years before its official launch, a process all Smeg products undergo, and is rated for a minimum of 15 years of use from the day it is first switched on.

Smeg (which is an acronym, really, standing for the location of the foundry in Emiliane where the appliances are made) have given their new cooker range a great mix of excellent energy ratings and a variety of fuel types. The dual-fuel SY4110s have an A energy rating for its two main furnaces, consuming 0.79 kilowatt hours each.

In addition to the two large ovens (57 liters and 51 liters capacity respectively), the dual-fuel Smeg SY4110s is equipped with cast-iron pan supports, a special wok burner and a warming zone. The warming zone is designed to keep cooked dishes perfectly warm without burning, curdling or drying them out – ideal, Smeg says, for dinner parties.

The main oven in the new Smeg cooker range has a total of 8 programmable functions: including a fan oven; defrost settings; fan-assisted variable grill; roast combined with fan and grill. Both ovens are lined with removable casings that have been designed to repel grease and common kitchen effluent – making the SY4110s one of Smeg’s easiest to clean appliances.

Smeg’s new look is successful from the start. The company contracted with one of the leading Italian design houses to produce what he describes as “thick side panels”: in other words, a wide, smooth kitchen face for the stove that gives it a very contemporary feel. The black and brushed steel color scheme allows the Smeg SY4110 to sit into most modern kitchen décor schemes with ease – and even add a touch of the new to a more ‘classic’ kitchen setting.

There is a touch of the old design palette in the new Smeg kitchen range. The knobs and dials arranged along the top of the kitchen front look like switches from an old fighter plane. In fact, it’s a nice touch: a little reminder of the classic look of Smeg fridges and freezers.

The Smeg gas hob is adaptable for both LPG and a standard natural gas supply. The oven doors are triple glazed, with the interior panel being thermo-reflective. This allows doors that are safe to touch from the outside, even when the ovens are operating at full capacity.

Overall, the Smeg SY4110s marks both a new direction for the company and a strong continuation of its commitment to quality design and good functionality. Perfect for larger kitchens.
